An acclaimed German mini-series about five friends set during World War II is to be shown on BBC Two later this year.

Unsere Muetter, Unsere Vaeter - or Our Mothers, Our Fathers - will be shown in the UK under the title Generation War.

The three-part subtitled drama tells of two brothers who become soldiers as well as a nurse, a singer and the latter's Jewish boyfriend.

The last foreign language drama to premiere on BBC Two was the second series of The Kingdom in 2001.

Broadcast in Germany in March, Our Mothers, Our Fathers drew record ratings and prompted a nationwide discussion about the role of ordinary Germans during the war.

The reaction was more polarised in Poland, where the drama was accused by some of playing down Nazi guilt.

"Generation War has a truly epic sweep and emotionally compelling narrative," said Sue Deeks, the BBC's head of programme acquisition.

"We are really delighted to bring this critically acclaimed and thought-provoking series to BBC viewers."
