Immortals beats Arthur Christmas at UK cinemas
Action movie Immortals has nudged ahead of animation Arthur Christmas to become the new number one offering at UK and Ireland cinemas.
The film, which stars new Superman actor Henry Cavill, took £2.16m to debut in the top spot, narrowly beating its seasonal rival which made £2.11m.
Immortals also topped the box office in the US and Canada at the weekend.
The only other new entry was Johnny Depp movie The Rum Diary in sixth place, with takings of £608,055.
Immortals, which recounts the story of legendary Greek hero Theseus, put to an end to the reign of Steven Spielberg's Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
The performance capture animation, featuring Jamie Bell as Herge's roving boy reporter, made £1.54m to take the number three spot.
The remainder of the top 10 comprised of films also slipping down the box office chart, including The Heist, In Time and Johnny English Reborn.
The comedy caper starring Rowan Atkinson boasts the biggest total takings since its release on the week's chart, with £19.7m in six weeks.
Chilling British tale The Awakening, starring Rebecca Hall and The Hour star Dominic West, just fell short of the top 10 on its debut, landing at 11 with takings of £273,083.
It has been shown on a relatively modest 139 screens around the UK.
