Secret agent comedy Johnny English Reborn has topped the UK and Ireland box office in its opening weekend.

The sequel, which sees British actor Rowan Atkinson reprise his role as the hapless MI7 agent, took £4.97m - eight years after the first film's release.

It easily beat its closest rival, a 3D version of Disney classic The Lion King, which entered the chart at number two with £2.7m.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy fell to third place after three weeks at the top.

There were two other new entries in the top 10 including Katie Holmes' horror Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark at five with £496,236.

Woody Allen's latest effort, Midnight In Paris starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams was one place behind, with around £500 less in takings.

The Inbetweeners Movie was at nine, bringing its total box office haul to £44.6m after eight weeks on release.

The Debt, starring Helen Mirren, rounded out the top 10.
