Waterloo Road gets internet spin-off
An online version of BBC One's school drama Waterloo Road will launch next year, the corporation has announced.
Waterloo Road Reunited will follow the fortunes of its parent show's characters once they have left the titular comprehensive.
Fans can also follow the characters' lives on social networking sites, as if they were real people.
Five series of the BBC drama have so been made, with a sixth to air in the New Year.
The Rochdale-set show, which regularly attracts an average of five million viewers, has proved popular with audiences.
Neil Morrissey, Angela Griffin and Jill Halfpenny are among the actors to have played teachers on the programme.
The online version follows the success of EastEnders' internet spin-off E20, which began earlier this year.
"The BBC is in a unique position to help grow the audience for distinctive, high-quality fiction beyond broadcast TV," said Victoria Jaye, head of fiction and entertainment multiplatform commissioning.
