Sherlock Holmes is to set the questions in the new series of satirical panel show Have I Got News For You.

Guest presenter Benedict Cumberbatch will join regular team leaders Paul Merton and Ian Hislop on the series, as it marks its 20th anniversary.

"How could I resist the chance for the audience to witness my being shot down in flames by the wit of Merton and Hislop?" Cumberbatch said.

John Bishop and Top Gear star Jeremy Clarkson will also guest present.

Cumberbatch said he was "very excited and honoured" to launch the new series, which begins on 14 October.

"I have watched the show since its inception, and my family and I used to make it a routine TV date to relish."

The show has featured guest presenters since original host Angus Deayton left in October 2002.

Cumberbatch is due to return in the BBC's modern take on the Sherlock Holmes mysteries in 2011.
