FTSE-100 index closes 30 points lower at 6,829

(Close): The FTSE 100 share index closed 30 points lower at 6,829, a fall of just 0.4%.

The index was dragged down by big falls among mining stocks.

Anglo American fell 4% to 835p; Randgold fell 4% to 8,020p; Antofagasta dropped 3.5% to 545p; and Rio Tinto ended the day 2.4% lower at 2,3870p.

The biggest gains were registered by the house building firms Taylor Wimpey, Barratt Developments, Persimmon and Berkeley Holdings.

Their shares rose by between 2.5% and 3.5%.

On the foreign exchanges the pound was worth $1.3139 and €1.1613.
