FTSE ends lower in quiet holiday trading

(Close): Shares in London closed lower in thin trading, with many dealers still off for the Christmas holidays.

The benchmark FTSE 100 index ended 41 points down at 6,274.

The price of Brent and US light crude slipped further, down 3% at $36.63 - close to 11-year lows - and down 3% at $36.75 respectively.

The pound was up slightly against the euro at €1.36, and rose very slightly against the dollar to $1.484
