(Open): Leading US stocks opened slightly higher in relatively quiet trading the day after Christmas.

The Dow Jones was up 35 points, or 0.2%, to 18,066, after hitting another record high on Wednesday.

The broader S&P 500 index was up six points, or 0.3%, at 2,088, and the tech-based Nasdaq was up 17 points, or 0.4%, to 4,790.

Most European markets were closed. Shares edged higher in Japan, where the Nikkei 225 rose 10 points to 17819.
