(Close): Shares in outsourcing giant Capita was the FTSE's top performer of the day, gaining 4.7% after reporting a jump in half-year net profits on the back of £1.3bn of new contracts.
Overall, the FTSE was 2.81 points higher at 6,798.15, a rise of 0.04%.
On the downside, pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline fell 4.73% after posting disappointing quarterly results.
The company reported a 23% fall in pre-tax profits to £986m.
In China, where the group has been rocked by allegations of bribery, sales were down 20%.
On the currency markets, the pound was down by 0.17%, against the dollar, at $1.7037, and also lower, by 0.16%, against the euro at 1.2653 euros.
