Canadian wildfires: Fort McMurray 'nearly abandoned'

A huge wildfire ravaging the Canadian province of Alberta has grown more slowly than feared, officials say.

Firefighters held key areas and the blaze now covers about 1,610 sq km (620 sq miles) - less than the 1,800 sq km (700 sq miles) estimated on Saturday.

But it could be months before the fire is fully brought under control - and it is still expected to be the most costly natural disaster in Canadian history.

More than 100,000 residents of Fort McMurray have fled the blaze - many fleeing south to Edmonton.

Laura Bicker reports.
