Senator: 'I saw police arrive with machine guns'

Several shots have been fired inside and outside the nation's parliament in Ottawa.

A Canadian senator described seeing police officers arrive at the scene and "put on their bullet proof vests and get their machine guns".

Senator Percy Downe, speaking to the BBC from his office nearby on Parliament Hill, said he knew there was an "elevated level of threat".
