Obama brands gun control vote 'shameful day for Washington'

US President Barack Obama has branded the decision to reject an expansion of gun-sale checks a "shameful day for Washington".

The plan was blocked on a 54-46 vote, six votes short of the 60-vote hurdle needed to clear the chamber.

Mr Obama said: "The American people are trying to figure out how can something have 90% support and yet not happen?"
