The doctor's view

A growing number of US doctors, educators and congressmen are warning that the maltreatment of children has become a national crisis.

The latest government figures show an estimated 1,770 children die from abuse and neglect each year. However, a recent congress report concludes the number of victims is nearer 2,500.

In Texas, one of the states with the worst child abuse records, the Dallas Children's Medical Center is dealing with a rising number of abused children and increasing levels of violence.
