US has 'deep regret' over Guatemala tests

US State Department spokesperson Fabiola Rodriguez-Ciampoli has said America has ''deep regret'' about a medical study that infected hundreds of Guatemalans with gonorrhoea and syphilis more than 60 years ago.

She added a task force was being set up to investigate further, before any decision on compensation would be made.

In the experiments, mentally ill patients and prisoners were infected without their consent.
