'Islam rejects the killing of innocent people' says Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf

The Muslim cleric behind plans to build an Islamic community centre near Ground Zero in New York has said Islam ''categorically rejects the killing of innocent people''.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf said the real battle was not between Muslims and non-Muslims but against moderates and extremists of different faiths.

Critics say building close to the site where almost 2,800 people were killed by al-Qaeda hijackers is offensive.
