President Obama hails ties between India and the US

US President Barack Obama has spent his final day in India with a lavish state dinner at the palace residence of India's President Pratibha Patil.

President Patil called Mr Obama's visit ''a historic milestone'' and the US president proposed a toast to the ''silken cords'' which tied India and the US together.

President Obama has backed India's ambition for permanent membership of the UN Security Council.
