The week when Soviet troops pull out of Afghanistan after nine years of fighting the mujahideen, civil rights leader Malcolm X is assassinated, one of the bloodiest battles in the Vietnam war rages between US and Viet Cong forces, residents of the Icelandic island Heimaey are airlifted to safety and Russia launches the Mir space station - then the world's largest spacecraft.
