High childbirth risks in Bangladesh

Mothers in Bangladesh are 20 times more likely to die in childbirth than in the United States.

In Matlab district, in south-eastern Bangladesh, the majority of mothers do not give birth in the hospital as it is too difficult for them to get there.

Ruby was one of the lucky ones. Her baby was not breathing and was given oxygen immediately. She knows that he may not have survived had she given birth at home.

The Health Show is broadcast on BBC World News on Saturdays at 1010 and 2010 GMT and on Sundays at 0710 and 2310 GMT. The programme is supported by the Gates Foundation.
