UN Palestinian resolution a 'staged confrontation'

The United Nations Security Council has rejected a Palestinian-backed resolution that called for an end to Israeli occupation within three years.

The resolution did not get the minimum nine votes in favour so it automatically failed.

The United States rejects the idea of an imposed timetable and, along with Australia, voted against the resolution.

US envoy Samantha Power said negotiations were the only way forward.
