Somers family 'unaware' of negotiations before fatal raid

The stepmother of a British-born photojournalist, killed by al-Qaeda militants in Yemen during a failed rescue bid, has told the BBC that the family were unaware that negotiations had taken place to try and free him.

Luke Somers and South African teacher Pierre Korkie were killed on Saturday during a joint US and Yemeni raid in the southern Shabwa region.

Mr Somers' stepmother Penny Bearman told the BBC's Lucy Hockings that the family had been unaware that a ransom figure had been set - and that someone had offered to pay it.
