US has 'obligation' to help Iraq, says former UK army head

The US has an "obligation" to intervene militarily in Iraq, according to the former head of the British Army.

Lord Dannatt told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast that Sunni-led militant group ISIS may not "be stopped" without US assistance, as their air power was needed to "stabilise the situation".

The White House is still considering a request from the Iraq's Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, for air-strikes against the extremists, who have gained control of large swathes of northern Iraq.
