Syria: Pope urges ceasefire in annual address

Pope Benedict XVI has urged the international community to end fighting in Syria.

In one of his strongest public appeals, he spoke of the suffering of Syria's civilian population and renewed calls for a ceasefire and peace talks.

In his annual address to diplomats, the Pope said the violence needed to end before the country became "a field of ruins".
