President Morsi: 'This is a critical period for Egypt'

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has appeared on Egyptian TV to defend the decree with which he granted himself sweeping new powers last week.

The move sparked huge protests across the country, though President Morsi has insisted that the measure is temporary and will end once Egypt has adopted a new constitution.

Egypt's assembly is voting on each of 234 articles in a draft constitution. It will then be sent to Mr Morsi for approval. After that, he must put it to a popular referendum.
