Ban Ki-moon on Middle East crisis: 'Families and children are dying'

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an immediate end to hostilities in the Middle East and has also warned against a possible ground offensive by Israel.

Speaking at a joint news conference with the head of the Arab League, Nail al-Arabi, he said "families and children are dying as a result of senseless violence''.

Talks aimed at achieving a truce between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza are due to resume in Egypt as the conflict enters its seventh day.
