Protesters blocked Army advance into Tahrir Square

Demonstrators in Tahrir Square placed themselves in the paths of tanks to block the army from opening up the area.

The BBC's Jim Muir said that protesters spent the night sleeping under the tracks of tanks to ensure that they could not advance.

Meanwhile many banks are opening for the first time in a week as Egypt's most influential opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, says it will enter talks with officials on ending the country's political crisis.
