John Simpson in Cairo's Tahrir Square

Thousands have gathered in the centre of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, amid calls by protest leaders for a million people to rally in support of demands for the removal of President Hosni Mubarak.

Reporting from Tahrir Square, the BBC's John Simpson says the protesters remain peaceful, and excited about being able to chant anti-Mubarak slogans without any fear that police might arrest them.
