US envoy George Mitchell on start of Middle East talks

The U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, George Mitchell, is holding a briefing following the opening of peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian representatives.

The United States has said it hopes the two sides can reach a peace deal in a year.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was ready to "go a long way in a short time." Meanwhile, the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, said he wanted a just peace and security for all.
