Rio strike threatens security ahead of carnival

Firefighters and police in Rio de Janeiro are on strike for higher pay, just one week before the world's biggest carnival begins.

The Brazilian federal government has already offered to make 14,000 troops available for security and is hoping to avoid the soaring crime rates that accompanied a similar strike in Bahia state.
