Workers on Panama canal expansion on strike for more pay

The project to expand the Panama Canal has ground to a halt because nearly 6,000 workers have gone on strike for more pay and better working conditions.

The multinational construction consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal has acknowledged that some workers have not been paid but says that the wages offered are adequate.

The project to expand the Panama Canal is due to be completed in 2014, exactly a century after the canal was first opened.
