First Chile miner rescued after 69 days underground

The first of the 33 miners trapped deep underground for 69 days in northern Chile has been rescued.

Florencio Avalos, 31, was winched up a 624m shaft in a custom-built capsule, wearing an oxygen mask and a belt monitoring his vital signs. He was met by his young daughter in emotional scenes.

The men have been trapped below ground since a tunnel collapsed at the mine on 5 August.

Officials say the last man out will be shift leader Luis Urzua.
