In Germany's election this week, the populist Alternative for Germany - or AfD - gained almost 13% of the vote.

The AfD capitalized on anti-immigrant sentiment following the European refugee crisis and vehemently opposes Angela Merkel's pro-refugee policies.

One Syrian refugee told BBC News about why he had invited people in Berlin to hug him and what he thought of the election result.
