Italian referendum polls open

Polls have opened in Italy in a constitutional referendum seeking to give more powers to the central government.

The Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has threatened to resign if he loses the vote, as he believes the reforms will make the state more efficient, cut costs and make the government more stable.

Critics claim it puts democracy at risk.
