Jordan's king urges change in Syria

King Abdullah of Jordan has said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should step down in the interest of his country.

"I believe, if I were in his shoes, I would step down," he has told BBC World News in an exclusive interview.

But the king also said that it was important for the president to begin a new era of political dialogue before standing aside, as his departure alone would not solve Syria's problems.

He warned that we would likely see "more of the same" if whoever replaced Assad did not have the ability to change the status quo.
