The economies of Russia and Japan are becoming more intertwined, as Japan relies increasingly on Russian gas from Sakhalin Island in Russia's far east.

The southern part was key to the pre-war Japanese empire and holds many stories of sadness and loss, as the BBC's Daniel Sandford reports.
