Greens departure raises prospect of early Irish election

Ireland may be facing an early general election after the Green Party withdrew from the coalition government.

The announcement came after Brian Cowen resigned as leader of his governing Fianna Fail party but said he would stay on as Prime Minister.

The Green Party leader, John Gormley, spoke of a breakdown in trust.
