Irish PM Cowen will remain party leader

The Irish Prime Minister, Brian Cowen, has announced he will not be standing down as leader of the ruling Fianna Fail party, but will offer colleagues a vote of confidence in his leadership by secret ballot.

Mr Cowen has faced calls from the opposition to step down after indebted Ireland was recently forced to accept an international bail-out worth worth around 85bn euros ($113bn; £72bn).
