Germany to debate Afghanistan policy

German ministers will debate the country's role in Afghanistan on Thursday.

The country has the third biggest deployment in Afghanistan - just under 5000 troops. Its forces were originally deployed to protect construction workers, but are increasingly being drawn into fighting.

Germany hopes to start withdrawing its troops from 2011.
