French protesters clash with police at oil refinery

Riot police in France have taken over a major oil refinery east of Paris, one of 12 facilities blockaded by strikers for more than 10 days.

They moved into the Total refinery at Grandpuits, 50km (30 miles) from the capital, in the early hours of Friday, after orders by President Nicolas Sarkozy to lift the blockade.

Protesters later clashed with riot police to try and regain control of the blockade.

The BBC's Christian Fraser said the French government was trying to show it was regaining control of refineries.
