Gas levels 'unsafe' in NZ mine where 29 men trapped

Rescue teams have not been able to enter a mine in New Zealand where 29 men are trapped because of gas levels that make the environment "unsafe" and "unstable", according to officials.

The miners have been trapped underground since an explosion on Friday and hopes for their rescue are fading with the passage of time.

Speaking to the media, Police Superintendent Gary Knowles said it was "not appropriate to send rescue teams underground at this stage".
