New Zealand earthquake: 'It was incredibly violent'

Residents in Kaikoura and Wellington, near the epicentre of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which hit New Zealand in the early hours of Monday, have described the tremors as 'incredibly violent'.

Two people have been killed, and military helicopters and a navy ship are being sent to evacuate more than a thousand people who remain stranded in Kaikoura.
