Peshawar - the city regarded by many as al-Qaeda's birthplace

Many Arab and Afghan mujahideen gathered in Peshawar's University Town during the 1980s in preparation for their fight against the Soviet Union's forces in Afghanistan.

It is thought that during that period this residential area became the birthplace of Al Qaeda.
