Taiwan election: What you need to know

Taiwan's presidential election on January 14 will be contested by the country's first ever female candidate, Tsai Ing-wen, along with veteran politician James Soong and the incumbent President Ma Ying-jeou.

Although Mr Ma won a landslide victory back in 2008, he now faces a tough fight from Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party.
