Khmer Rouge leader defends actions

The man known as Brother Number Two in Cambodia's Khmer Rouge regime has given a statement to a UN-backed court, defending himself against charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Nuon Chea, Pol Pot's deputy, said he had worked to "serve the interests of the nation" by protecting it from colonialism and invaders.

Some 1.7 million Cambodians died of starvation, overwork and execution during the four years of Khmer Rouge rule.

Guy DeLauney reports from Phnom Penh.
