Johannesburg university protest: Students and riot police in tense stand-off

South African police have fired tear gas and water cannon at students at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg after they forced their way into lecture halls, and disrupted classes.

Students threw stones at the police and private campus security guards.

The university reopened on Monday following earlier violent protests against a planned increase in tuition fees. The university had warned the entire academic year could be cancelled if classes did not resume.

Universities across South Africa have been affected by protests by students demanding free education.
