Mali rebels take control of Timbuktu

The Tuareg rebel movement in Mali has taken control of the town of Timbuktu.

The town is the last remaining government bastion in the north of Mali.

Residents say government forces have fled and rebels have entered the town and planted a flag. It comes as the military junta has announced they will hand back power to civilians.

Bill Hayton reports.
