Are we safe to fly over warzones?

The chief executive of Emirates airlines has stopped his jets flying over Iraq, for fear of missiles launched by Islamist miltants. But Qantas and other airlines are still flying over Iraq.

Following the attack on MH17 and then the temporary decision of some airlines not to land at Israel's main international airport, it quickly became clear that there is wide variation in regulation and no one voice taking a decision.

The UN body that oversees civil aviation will meet members of the airline industry on Tuesday to try to work out risk, and who makes the judgements.
