A look ahead to Taiwan's presidential election

Voters in Taiwan go to the polls to elect their president in January.

The election could have a big impact on the island's relations with rival China.

Beijing still sees Taiwan as its province, even though it has been ruled separately since the end of a civil war in 1949.

Depending on who is elected, relations with Beijing could take a turn for the better or the worse.
