Tata Steel job cuts: Osborne defends government action

George Osborne has defended the UK government's action to help the steel industry, after the UK's biggest producer announced more than 1,000 jobs were to go.

Plants in south Wales will bear the brunt of the cutbacks announced by Tata on Monday, with Port Talbot and Llanwern near Newport worst affected.

The chancellor pledged help on energy costs and cheap Chinese steel imports, after Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell accused him in a Commons spat on Tuesday of only caring about the welfare of bankers.
