The Queen opens pioneering Conwy Tunnels in 1991

It was 19 years in the planning, subject of Britain's longest planning inquiry, five years in construction and the most expensive single trunk road project in the UK when the Conwy Tunnels were opened by the Queen in 1991.

Now it is 25 years since the £190m three-quarters-of-a-mile project, the first prefabricated immersed tube road tunnel built in the UK, was built to alleviate the traffic chaos around Conwy and create a dual carriageway for the A55 North Wales Expressway.

Reporter Roger Pinney reported on its opening.
