New teachers 'need more practice' to progress

A lack of support for newly-qualified teachers is cause for "extreme concern", a group of AMs has said.

In a report on supply teaching, the Welsh assembly's education committee said it was told a lack of professional support may be causing a "high percentage" to leave the profession.

It estimated 30% of supply teachers - about 1,500 - were newly qualified teachers (NQTs).

Welsh ministers said they were working with councils to see how support could be improved.

Committee chairman David Rees said more needed doing to help teachers with their continuing professional development (CPD).
